Moving to a new country is exciting and, if I’m honest, it can also be completely overwhelming. I know this firsthand: I’ve lived through a few relocations myself, navigating languages I didn’t feel very confident with, healthcare systems I didn’t understand, and administration systems that felt like mazes. So when I say I understand what you’re going through, I really mean it!

The Hidden Challenge Nobody Warns You About

When people move abroad, they usually prepare for the big things: finding a home, sorting out visas, choosing a school. What catches most people off guard is something smaller and much more constant: the hundred tiny interactions of daily life that suddenly all require French.

Booking a doctor’s appointment. Understanding a letter from your child’s school. Chatting with a neighbor. Reading a food label. Asking a question at the pharmacy. None of these feel like « big » moments, but together, they shape how at home you feel in your new city.

• Free public transport on weekends: Clermont-Ferrand’s tram and bus network (T2C) offers free rides on weekends, which makes it easy (and cheap) to explore the city with your family without worrying about tickets. All schedules and lines are updated on Google Maps, but you can also download the local app.
• The « Forum des Associations » in September: Every year in early September, the city hosts a forum where dozens of local associations (sports clubs, cultural activities, hobby groups) present what they offer. It’s a great way to enroll your children (and yourself!) in activities, meet people, and start building a routine. In 2026, the forum will take place on September 5th.
• Local Culture: Embrace the local rugby spirit by following the professional team ASM Clermont Auvergne, a massive part of the city’s social fabric!
• Explore beyond the city center: The Puy-de-Dôme volcano and the Chaîne des Puys are right on your doorstep. Many newcomers don’t realize how accessible this natural landscape is until their first autumn hike.
